How Vivian’s Heart Grew Her Family and Farm

In the village of Mwangeza, two young boys, Mathayo and Eliwelu, faced a childhood marked by uncertainty. Food was never guaranteed, school attendance was irregular, and a safe place to sleep was often out of reach. Their mother, struggling with illness, was unable to provide the care and stability they desperately needed.

Seeing their situation, Vivian and her husband made a life-changing decision. They opened their home and their hearts to the boys. “Their mother is sick, and she could not take care of them properly. She was not providing them with food, she was not concerned about where they slept, and she sometimes stopped them from going to school,” recalls Vivian, guardian of Mathayo and Eliwelu and caregiver to participants at the Compassion-supported child development center.

For three years, Vivian has cared for the boys as if they were her own children. She ensured they had regular meals, a comfortable place to sleep, and the opportunity to attend school consistently. What began as a simple act of compassion became a lifeline for two vulnerable children.

Before moving into Vivian’s home, Mathayo and Eliwelu lived a difficult life. “They ate at any home and slept anywhere,” Vivian explains.

Recognizing the boys’ vulnerability, Vivian stepped in, determined to provide the love, security, and care every child deserves.

Because Mathayo and Eliwelu were registered participants in Compassion’s program through the local church, additional support became available to help the family. The church partnered with Vivian, helping her strengthen her ability to care for the children while also improving her family’s economic stability.

Through church-facilitated savings groups and livelihood support, Vivian expanded her farming activities and started a small business. These opportunities have significantly increased her household income, enabling her to provide for the children’s needs and create a more secure future for the entire family.

“With the church’s support, we have managed to expand our farming and open a business from saving groups. All this enables us to meet the children’s needs,” says Vivian.

Today, the transformation is evident. Mathayo and Eliwelu are thriving in a loving home where their physical, emotional, and educational needs are met. They are able to attend school, enjoy healthy meals, and experience the joy and security of childhood.

For Vivian, the greatest reward is seeing how far the boys have come. “When you look at the growth of these children, we thank God the church has helped us rescue their lives!” she says with gratitude.

Vivian’s story is a powerful reminder that compassion creates ripples of transformation. Through the support of the local church, a caregiver’s loving heart has not only changed the lives of two vulnerable children but has also strengthened a family and improved its economic future.
